Shelters initiative for Indigenous women and children

$44.8 million funding initiative to create 12 new shelters for Indigenous women and children escaping family violence.

Indigenous women and children face unique challenges and barriers to housing. For those who experience violence, a shelter is often a first step to rebuilding their lives and protecting them from further violence. CMHC will provide new funding of $44.8 million, over five years for the construction of 12 new shelters, including ten in First Nation communities on-reserve across the country and two in the territories (Nunavut, Yukon and Northwest Territories). The Shelter Initiative is led by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).

Thank you for your interest in the Shelters Initiative. Announced on June 17, 2021, we have selected recipients for the construction and ongoing operational support of 12 new shelters across Canada for Indigenous women, children, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people escaping family violence. The selection process was guided by a committee with representatives from CMHC, ISC, the National Aboriginal Circle Against Family Violence, as well as Shelter Managers and Directors working in Indigenous shelters.

Additionally, as outlined in the Fall Economic Statement 2020, the Government of Canada proposes to invest additional funding to support the construction and operation of new shelters and second-stage (transitional) housing for First Nations, Inuit and Métis’ women, children and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people across the country.
