Shelters in the Territories

Forgivable loans for up to 100% of total eligible costs for the construction of new shelters

CMHC will provide funding of $13.1 million over five years, through the Affordable Housing Fund for the construction of two new shelters in the Territories.

Thank you for your interest in the Shelters Initiative. Announced on June 17, 2021, we have selected recipients for the construction and ongoing operational support of 12 new shelters across Canada for Indigenous women, children, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people escaping family violence. The selection process was guided by a committee with representatives from CMHC, ISC, the National Aboriginal Circle Against Family Violence, as well as Shelter Managers and Directors working in Indigenous shelters.

Additionally, as outlined in the Fall Economic Statement 2020, the Government of Canada proposes to invest additional funding to support the construction and operation of new shelters and second-stage (transitional) housing for First Nations, Inuit and Métis’ women, children and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people across the country. Further information about this new funding will be available in the coming months. Please continue to refer to this page for the latest updates or connect with a Housing Solutions Specialist in your region.
