CMHC studied Sustainable Mortgage Bonds and their implications for the housing industry in Canada.

Two main reasons drive this work:

  • the large funding gap for affordable housing
  • the relevant environmental impact of the housing sector

Sustainable Mortgage Bonds have the potential to:

  • produce positive environmental and social impacts to the housing industry
  • meet the objectives of the National Housing Strategy
  • achieve United Nations Sustainable Development goals
  • support CMHC’s 2030 aspirational goal
