This notice has been written to explain how CMHC interacts with the public on social media platforms.

CONTENT AND FREQUENCY

We use our social media accounts as a method of sharing information about our programs, services and company, and as a communication, marketing, and outreach channel to reach and engage with our audiences.

Because the servers of social media platforms are managed by a third party, our social media accounts are subject to downtime that may be out of our control. We accept no responsibility for platforms downtime.

LINKS TO OTHER WEBSITES

Our social media accounts may post or display links for websites that are not under our control. These links are provided solely for the convenience of users. CMHC is not responsible for the information found through these links, nor does it endorse the sites or their content.

FOLLOWING, FAVOURITING, LIKING, POSTING AND SUBSCRIBING

Our decision to "follow," "favourite", "subscribe", “like” or “post” to another social media account does not imply an endorsement of that account, channel, page or site, and neither does sharing (re-tweeting, reposting or linking) content from another user.

COMMENTS AND INTERACTION

We love it when you comment or engage with us on social media. Our accounts are monitored regularly. We do our best to make sure that comments and questions are read and responded to as soon as possible.

For any matter that is confidential, or too complicated for posting to the public, please contact us by calling 1-800-668-2642 or emailing contactcentre@cmhc.ca.

Although we will work hard to help you, we cannot guarantee that we will understand your question completely or answer it accurately. By contacting us through a social media site, you acknowledge that any response we provide to you through the same site:

  • is intended to provide helpful information or resources
  • is not considered to be definitive advice or guaranteed to solve your issue

We ask that your comments be relevant and respectful. We reserve the right to delete comments that violate this notice, and the user may be blocked and reported to prevent further inappropriate comments.

We cannot engage in issues of party politics or answer questions that break the rules of this notice.

We reserve the right to edit or remove comments that:

  • Contain personal information;
  • Are contrary to the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;
  • Express racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, slanderous, insulting or life-threatening messages;
  • Put forward serious, unproven or inaccurate accusations against individuals or organizations;
  • Are aggressive, coarse, violent, obscene or pornographic;
  • Are offensive, rude or abusive to an individual or an organization;
  • Are not sent by the author or are put forward for advertising purposes;
  • Encourage illegal activity;
  • Contain announcements from labour or political organizations;
  • Are unintelligible or irrelevant;
  • Are repetitive or spam; and
  • Do not, in our opinion, add to the normal flow of the discussion.

In short, please be respectful and make sure that your comments are relevant to where they are posted. The views of users commenting on our social media accounts do not represent the views of CMHC.

PRIVACY

Social media platforms are third-party services and are not hosted on CMHC servers. Users who choose to interact with us via social media should read the terms of service and privacy policies of these third-party service providers and those of any applications used to access them:

  • Facebook's Terms of Service / Data Use Policy
  • Instagram's Terms of Use / Data Policy
  • LinkedIn's User Agreement / Privacy Policy
  • Twitter's Terms of Service
  • YouTube's Terms of Service

Information posted publicly on social media – whether it is directed at CMHC or not – can be read by anyone. Therefore, we strongly advise users not to post personal information – whether their own, or the information of others – on social media.

We may use information you provide on social media – your name or handle, and the personal opinions contained in your tweets, @Replies and Direct Messages to us – to respond to your inquiry or for statistical or analytical purposes. The personal information that you provide directly to us falls under Personal Information Bank PSU 938 Outreach Activities. When reporting on social media statistics, we remove all names, handles or specific personal data.

OFFICIAL LANGUAGES

Many social media platforms have multiple language options and provide instructions on how to set your preferences. CMHC respects the Official Languages Act and is committed to ensuring that our information is available in both French and English and that both versions are of equal quality.

We reply to comments in the official language in which they are posted.

While we work hard to make sure that we are taking a balanced approach to sharing content in both official languages, we sometimes share third-party content available only in the language in which they were originally shared or written.

COOKIES

We use temporary cookies and other technologies, such as pixel tags, to deliver and measure the effectiveness of tailored advertisements on third-party websites, which form part of our social media presence.

Please note that if you don’t allow these cookies, you may still encounter CMHC advertisements on social media platforms, but their presence will be coincidental.

If you disable cookies, pixel tags will still be attached to your device when you click on a CMHC advertisement. The pixel tag is anonymous and cannot identify you as an individual. CMHC will not know if you have clicked on an advertisement unless you subsequently identify yourself by completing a form, for example: to submit a question, or register for a white paper or newsletter.

CMHC Employees on Social Media

Some of CMHC’s employees have accounts on social media. Despite their professional affiliation with us, their posts do not represent our official position. CMHC takes no responsibility for the content of its employees’ personal social media accounts.
