Accelerating housing supply across Canada
The Housing Accelerator Fund incentivizes and rewards local governments to make ambitious reforms to land use planning and streamline development approvals. These systemic changes aim to accelerate the supply of housing Canadians need, creating long-term impacts.
The Housing Accelerator Fund is one piece of the federal government's response to increase housing supply. We will continue to work with communities across the country to deliver a full range of solutions to build more homes.
How the Fund is delivering results
By cutting red tape and fast-tracking housing development, the Housing Accelerator Fund is delivering results. Local governments have been ambitious in their approaches.
- 160,585 residential building permits were issued—22,000 more than expected.
- Cities and regions estimate this investment will lead to the creation of over 750,000 permitted homes for people in towns, cities and Indigenous communities across Canada over the next decade.
Action Plans are key to delivering results
To receive funding, approved local governments developed ambitious commitments through their Action Plans. These plans are designed to:
- remove barriers
- speed up development approvals
- support measures to build more housing
While each community's Action Plan is unique, all plans will result in more new housing than would have been approved otherwise.
After an initial payment at signing, 3 annual payments are conditional on the successful implementation of the Action Plan commitments. When commitments are not met, funding can be reduced or agreements terminated.
Reporting progress on funding, targets and achievements
This progress report shows the total funding approved for each community. It also provides details on their targets, achievements and overall progress as of the annual reporting period. The Housing Supply Growth Target includes both the expected permits without the Housing Accelerator Fund (baseline growth) and the number of additional units resulting from the program (HAF-incented units). The Housing Supply Growth Target was divided over the program's 3 years. During the annual review, the number of permits issued was measured against the annual forecast.
