Rental Market Survey
CMHC conducts the Rental Market Survey (RMS) every year in October to estimate the relative strengths in Canada’s rental market. This annual survey is conducted on a sample basis in all urban areas with populations of 10,000 and more.
The survey targets only privately initiated structures with at least 3 rental units that have been on the market for at least 3 months. It collects market rent, available and vacant unit data for all sampled structures.
Condominium Apartment Survey
In addition to the regular Rental Market Survey, CMHC will conduct the Condominium Apartment Survey between mid-August and mid-September. The purpose of this survey is to gather information on the secondary rental market. A description of the survey follows.
Information gathered in the Rental Market Survey and the Condominium Apartment Survey will be released in this year’s Rental Market Reports for applicable centres.
CMHC enumerators will contact property managers of condominium apartment buildings in August in Halifax, Montreal, Quebec, Gatineau, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, Kelowna, Victoria and Vancouver. Respondents will be asked to participate in a brief survey which collects information on rental units in their buildings.
The goal of this survey is to provide estimates of rental rates, vacancy rates and average rents of condominium apartments.
