Understanding the current housing challenges facing Métis communities is vital for the Ministry of Housing of Métis Nation–Saskatchewan to support future housing initiatives. This research project will conduct a comprehensive assessment of Métis-specific housing requirements across its regions and communities. It’s designed to bridge the gap in housing data and provide a foundation for future housing strategies and developments. The result will be a centralized, accessible database and an increased ability to make evidence-based decisions aligned with the needs of Métis communities.
3 Key Objectives
-
✔
Address data gaps by consolidating existing reports and creating a centralized database of Métis-specific housing data.
-
✔
Understand Métis Nation–Saskatchewan region- and community-specific housing challenges, prioritizing areas such as affordable housing, accessibility and transitional housing.
-
✔
Deliver insights to guide housing development strategies and initiatives for Métis communities.
Project scope and outcomes
Guiding housing strategies with data
Métis Nation–Saskatchewan represents Métis citizens in the province. Its Ministry of Housing works to create opportunities for individuals and families to access safe, affordable homes rooted in community.
To support future housing initiatives, the ministry must understand the current challenges facing Métis communities. Tailoring solutions to community-specific needs is only possible with insights from consolidated and up-to-date data. However, the ministry lacked reliable data on the housing needs of Métis communities across different regions. It needed more accurate data on how housing needs differ between urban, rural and northern communities.
The ministry also wanted to confirm which community segments, such as low-income families, seniors or single parents, face the greatest housing challenges. Finally, it needed to know which types of housing — such as affordable, transitional and accessible — are most urgently needed.
Bridging the housing data gap
This research project will bridge the gap in housing data across Métis Nation–Saskatchewan regions and communities and provide a foundation for future housing strategies. Research will identify housing needs per region and per community to determine the most urgent areas of need.
The project will include reviewing and compiling existing housing reports, surveys and community assessments.
A survey will gather fresh, region-specific data on housing needs across Métis communities. The survey will address affordability, accessibility and other critical housing factors.
In-person community engagements will gather qualitative insights into housing challenges, especially from vulnerable groups such as seniors, people experiencing homelessness and single-parent families.
Holistic insights into Métis-specific housing needs
A key outcome of the project will be a holistic understanding of Métis-specific housing needs across urban, rural and northern communities. A detailed report will identify regional and community-specific housing challenges and needs. It will also highlight priority areas for housing interventions, including vulnerable populations and regions with acute shortages.
Data analysis will also lead to practical, evidence-based recommendations to guide Métis Nation–Saskatchewan’s housing strategies, funding proposals and project planning. The research team will develop tools, templates and frameworks to use in ongoing housing assessments.
Another key outcome will be improved housing data access through a centralized database of Métis-specific housing information. As well, stronger partnerships between the Housing department, communities and stakeholders will foster trust and cooperation in addressing housing challenges.
