36 affordable housing units for families, individuals and seniors to be built in Cowansville

The Government of Quebec, the Government of Canada, the City of Cowansville and Innov Habitat Drummond today announced the construction of Place d’Orléans, a 36-unit building for families, individuals and seniors. The total investment for this project is more than $14 million.

To mark the event, a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place at the site of the future building on Orléans Street in Cowansville, in the presence of Isabelle Charest, Parliamentary Assistant to the Quebec Minister Responsible for Canadian Relations and Member of the National Assembly for Brome-Missisquoi, on behalf of Karine Boivin Roy, Quebec Minister Responsible for Housing; Louis Villeneuve, Member of Parliament for Brome–Missisquoi, on behalf of Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister Responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada; Sylvie Beauregard, Mayor of Cowansville; Amélie Fournier, City Councillor and President of Accès Habitation Brome-Missisquoi; and Sébastien Brière, Executive Director of Innov Habitat Drummond.

The Government of Quebec is contributing to this project in the form of a grant of more than $7.1 million from the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ), which is also securing the organization’s mortgage loan. The Government of Canada is investing more than $2.7 million in the project through the third Canada-Quebec Rapid Housing Initiative Agreement. The City of Cowansville’s contribution will take the form of a tax credit, work related to municipal services and a donation of land, representing a total of $2 million.

Work is scheduled to commence this summer and is expected to last for a period of just over a year. Once the building is occupied, it will be managed by the Office municipal d’habitation de Brome-Missisquoi.

Highlights:

• Up to 28 of the 36 households could potentially benefit from the Société d’habitation du Québec’s (SHQ’s) Rent Supplement Program, ensuring that they spend no more than 25% of their income on rent. This additional assistance is covered by the SHQ (90%) and the City of Cowansville (10%).
• Accès Habitation Brome-Missisquoi is an organization dedicated to the development of affordable housing in Brome-Missisquoi. As the owner of the building, the organization will develop it and entrust its management to the Office municipal d’habitation de Brome-Missisquoi.
