The CMHC Housing Research Scholarship Program offers postdoctoral fellowships for up to 2 years with a valued amount of $45,000 per year. If funds allow, support under the program may go to eligible trainees in the Masters and PhD categories.


Program Goal
Our goal is to recognize excellence in early-career academic research, advance key knowledge in the realm of housing, and expand the pool of highly skilled and qualified researchers.
The program objectives are to:

recognize excellence in early-career academic research

advance knowledge and application in the field of housing

expand the community of reliable, highly skilled and qualified researchers

Previous Recipients and their stories

Dr. Andrew Crosby received the CMHC-SSHRC Scholarship in 2021 for his research on rental housing insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada.
He's a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Planning whose work focuses on housing justice, policing, and social movement mobilization. Andrew has published articles in various academic journals, including Canadian Public Administration, Urban History Review, and Social Justice.
His postdoctoral research is funded by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and the Bora Laskin National Fellowship in Human Rights Research.

Application process
The application deadline is Friday, September 13, 2023.
Reporting requirements:
- Applicants looking for specific requirements should refer the postdoctoral fellowship funding opportunity of the agency to which they are applying.
- Additionally, CMHC may reach out to award recipients to obtain information for promotional purposes. Information requests include:
- research results to date and expected impacts
- publications and knowledge translation
- paragraph summary/quote that could be used in a CMHC newsletter
- picture of Fellow with research partners (if applicable)
Specific Requirements
Fellows may participate in standard knowledge translation activities. This includes presenting research findings to targeted audiences and producing lay summaries for dissemination. Fellows may be expected to attend the National Housing Conference to share research project results with other Fellows and stakeholders. Associated costs (travel and hospitality) will be covered by CMHC.
