Addressing the Housing Needs of Refugee Families (Research Insight)

This Research Insight highlights the need for holistic, wrap-around support for new refugee families.

Under our Research and Planning Fund, CMHC worked with the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba. Our goal was to better understand how the provision of affordable, transitional housing coupled with wrap-around programming impacted the resettlement of refugee families.

The literature reviews settlement and integration indicators and outcomes across 6 themes:

• Housing, affordability indicator
• Language proficiency, labour-market-outcomes indicators
• Financial literacy, financial-behaviour-outcomes indicators
• After-school youth programs, academic-achievement indicators
• Childcare and early childhood education, school-readiness indicators
• Community connection, sense-of-belonging indicators

The organization was able to increase their internal capacity for research and evaluation and created tools that could be shared with similar organizations looking to enhance research capacity and quality.
