Understanding housing needs of people with developmental disabilities

In 2019, we commissioned research examining the diverse housing needs of individuals with developmental disabilities in order to inform National Housing Strategy programs. The review focused on Canada, but researchers extended the search to international sources where relevant.

This review covers the following key elements:

• identified housing needs and the extent to which these needs are met/unmet:
  • housing features
  • home supports
  • locational features
  • other needs specific to each group
• challenges and barriers in accessing suitable housing
• intersectionality with other identities (e.g., race, gender, age, family status, indigeneity, health, location)
• the potential and proven solutions for meeting housing needs

Key findings:

• An estimated 13,200 adults with developmental disabilities live with parents or other family members in Canada.
• There are challenges in learning, communicating, forming relationships with others, and adapting to social norms. These challenges have an impact on navigating the housing systems and access to affordable housing.
• Individuals with developmental disabilities face discriminatory views about their ability to live independently and contribute to society.
• Youth with disabilities face long wait lists for supportive housing.
• Landlords are less willing to rent to people with developmental disabilities.
