This Research Insight explores the housing conditions of Indigenous households, as revealed by the 2021 Census. It provides a detailed snapshot of core housing need faced by Indigenous communities across Canada, including off-reserve and on-reserve households.
Highlights
Incidence of housing need: Off-reserve Indigenous households were 17.8% more likely than non-Indigenous households to live in housing that fell below adequacy, suitability and/or affordability standards.
On-reserve housing need: Though core housing need is not calculated for on-reserve households due to data limitations, 43.9% of on-reserve homes in 2021 failed to meet at least 1 of the 3 housing standards.
Overcrowding: Overcrowding remains a significant challenge in Inuit Nunangat, where more than half of households live in unsuitable housing.
