Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) Close your blinds or drapes in the summer; leave them open in the winter to use the free heat of the sun Turn off the gas fireplace pilot lights in the summer Wash your laundry in cold water Use a clothesline or drying rack Air dry your dishes in the dishwasher Turn off your computer monitor(s) when they are not in use Unplug electronics when away for extended periods Use fans for cooling in the summer instead of air conditioning Use dimmers on lights	Use a programmable thermostat Fix leaky faucets and toilets and install low-flow showerheads and toilets Caulk and seal around pipes in the walls and floor, under sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms, and behind toilet fixtures Reduce air leakage by caulking open joints between window and door frames and ensure that window and door weather-stripping gaskets are intact and in good condition Install a rain barrel to capture water for outdoor water use	Consider using alternative energy sources such as solar or wind Choose energy efficient appliances: check the EnerGuide labelling on large appliances and the ENERGY STAR® ratings for electronics, office products and small appliances When purchasing a new clothes washing machine, consider a front-loading type; they use up to 40% less water and 60% less energy than top-loading machines Clean and service your heating system regularly and maintain your heat recovery ventilator (HRV)
