Housing Research Awards: Enhancing Housing-Sector Expertise

The Housing Research Awards Program recognizes world-class housing research being conducted in Canada and provides funding for research teams to promote and expand their work. There are 4 monetary awards given out each year:

• The CMHC President’s Medal for Outstanding Housing Research ($20,000)
• The Gold Roof Award for Housing Research Excellence ($10,000)
• The Gold Roof Award for Knowledge to Action ($10,000)
• The North Star Travel Award for Northern or Remote Research (Two or more awards of up to $5,000 each)

With these awards, we aim to make great, useful research more visible. We also want to ensure that this research gets to the right people, who can then put it into practice. The overall goal: to enhance expertise and capacity in Canada’s housing sector.

2019 Award Winners

The awards were given to the following projects:

• Partnerships for affordable housing: policy, planning and community building
  The research created multi-sector partnerships to develop solutions to affordable housing challenges.
• Eliminating LGBTQ2S youth and young adult homelessness
  The research team launched Canada’s first transitional housing program at the LGBTQ2S YYA-YMCA Sprott House. 
• Metro Vancouver transit-oriented affordable housing study
  The award was given to the team for their project that studied the challenges and opportunities of developing affordable rental housing close to transit.

Because similar conditions exist elsewhere in Canada, these findings and solutions are applicable to other communities in Canada.  Read more about past winning projects.
