A National Housing Day message from Romy Bowers

November 22, 2023

National Housing Day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of housing. It’s also a call for us to work collectively to build a future where every Canadian has the warmth and safety of a home.

Home is…

… more than 4 walls and a roof — it’s the foundation of everything we do. It’s a place where everyone should feel safe to be themselves.

Without stable housing, everything else becomes more challenging. Housing helps us stay employed, do better in school and to access community services. A safe and secure home gives us the stability we need to face life’s challenges and enables us to participate fully in society.

What does home mean to you?

Visit the National Housing Day page — share your story and download images to share on social media to help spread awareness.

Romy Bowers, President and CEO of CMHC shares her thoughts on the need to think differently about how we tackle housing challenges — watch her message.

(Opening visual: Screen entitled “National Housing Day” with a purple and red background featuring the outline of a roof.)

000:00:03

(Visual: Screen transitions to show Romy Bowers, President & CEO of CMHC, sitting in an office building, speaking into the camera. Her title appears in the bottom of the screen.)

Every year on National Housing Day, I reflect on why housing is so important. We all know that it’s more than a roof over our heads.

000:00:11

(Visual: Screen transitions to a family — mother, father and young child — standing in front of a house on a sunny day. The camera zooms in on their smiling faces.)

It’s the foundation for everything we do.

000:00:14

(Visual: Screen transitions to two people outdoors on a cold day. They are seen from behind, looking at the water and a cityscape beyond.)

000:00:17

(Visual: As Romy Bowers speaks, the screen transitions every few seconds through a series of shots: a couple standing in front of a house entrance on a sunny day; another woman and man seen inside a home; a woman standing outside in front of Indigenous multi-unit housing; two construction workers outside talking at the back of their pickup truck; a close-up of one of the workers marking up blueprints; a panoramic shot of a building site and mountains beyond; an urban building site with workers; the structure of a large building under construction, with machinery driving by; a woman on a balcony overlooking a cityscape; an elderly woman gardening on a balcony with mountains beyond; a view of a small city surrounded by mountains; another shot of the first family, this time in their driveway seen from a distance; a street lined with new row housing; a man outside a two-story multi-unit property; a woman cuddling a young child on a couch; a man in front of a concrete cityscape; a close-up of a woman smiling, sitting in a living room; a man in a baseball cap sitting in a hotel room with a kitchenette, guitar in his lap; a woman in a small room, surrounded by Indigenous handiwork, materials and equipment; a man perched on a worktable next to wooden 3D building models.)

I’m also reflecting on the need to think differently about how we tackle housing challenges. That’s why we want to work with partners across the housing sector. Let’s find new ideas that will help accelerate the housing construction that is urgently needed.

000:00:41

(Visual: Screen transitions back to a close-up of Romy Bowers speaking.)

How can we work together to find innovative ways to get more Canadians the homes they need at the price they can afford?

(Visual: Screen transitions to a smiling woman standing in a building courtyard, followed quickly by a shot of a man with arms crossed, standing on a bridge lined with buildings to the right.

(Visual: Screen transitions back to a close-up of Romy Bowers, then quickly scrolls left to transition to a slide with a purple and red background.)

000:00:45

(Visual: Screen shows a red and purple background. The text on screen reads, “Partner with us. Learn more about funding and financing opportunities.” The Government of Canada and CMHC logos appear below the text.)

Reimagining how we can make housing affordable for every Canadian

We believe that everyone in Canada deserves a home they can afford and that meets their needs.

But we can’t do that alone. It’s crucial that we work collectively, as a community, and as partners to make it happen.

We want to work with more partners across the housing sector to find new, innovative solutions to Canada’s housing challenges. This involves uniting governments, financial organizations and other partners to incentivize and help make system-wide changes that meet all Canadians’ housing needs.

Join us. Let’s collaborate and create innovative solutions together — discover funding and financing programs.
