Everybody deserves a place to live that protects both their health and safety. So when major repairs are needed for on-reserve affordable housing, we’re here to help.
Our Rental Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (Rental RRAP) On-Reserve is aimed specifically at on-reserve housing that isn’t owned by the First Nation. Through this program, we’re helping landlords pay for the mandatory repairs needed to their self-contained affordable housing units.
Who is eligible for financial support?
You can apply for financial support if you’re the owner (or landlord) of on-reserve affordable housing units. However, the following criteria apply:
- The property isn’t owned by a First Nation.
- Your tenants’ household income must be at or below the established limit which is based on the location of the community.
- The rents you charge, both before and after the repairs, are at or below our established limits.
- You are not related to your tenants.
What home repairs are covered by this program?
Financial support is available for homes that lack basic facilities or need major repairs to keep the occupants safe. Structural, electrical, plumbing, heating and fire safety work are just some of the areas covered by this program.
Important: Have you done any of these repairs before getting your application approved in writing? If so, they won’t be eligible for funding under this program.
How much financial support is available?
We will provide up to $60,000 for each eligible unit that needs mandatory home repairs. If your property is located on-reserve in northern or remote areas, the maximum amount may be increased by 25%.
This is a forgivable loan, which means it doesn’t have to be repaid as long as you meet certain conditions. If you meet those conditions, you must agree to:
- place a ceiling on the rents that will be charged after the repairs are done
- limit the number of rent increases during the term of the loan agreement with CMHC
- rent only to tenants with household incomes at or below the specified limits
- cover the costs of mandatory repairs for ineligible units and/or for costs above the maximum value of the forgivable loan
