Promoting Mortgage Literacy
CMHC helps Canadians make informed and responsible homebuying decisions by providing access to a range of tools and resources that promote mortgage literacy, including apps, online calculators, fact sheets and videos.
CMHC’s suite of online tools includes a debt service calculator, a household budget calculator, a mortgage payment calculator, and a mortgage affordability calculator. Our mortgage affordability calculator, for example, can help homebuyers estimate the maximum house price, mortgage amount and monthly mortgage payments they can afford.
Also in support of Canadians’ mortgage literacy, CMHC’s website offers mortgage planning tips and information on credit reports, mortgage fraud and how to deal with mortgage payment difficulties. CMHC’s “Ready Set Home” app are great tools to help Canadians make the right housing choices.
Reaching Out to Newcomers
CMHC has produced housing-related information, tools and resources in eight languages to help newcomers find a safe and affordable home in Canada. In addition to English and French, CMHC’s information on renting and buying a home is available in Mandarin/Simplified Chinese, Arabic, Punjabi, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu.
A dedicated website — www.cmhc.ca/newcomers — has been created to provide housing information to newcomers. CMHC also distributes housing information for newcomers through ethno-cultural media outlets, other government departments and immigration settlement organizations.
The “Housing for Newcomers” site features information on home buying, including such topics as: what to look for when buying a home; how much home can you afford; choosing the right mortgage; making an offer and closing the deal; and finding a home of your own.
The “Housing for Newcomers” site also features information on renting, including such topics as: understanding “for rent” ads; checking out a home or apartment; signing a lease; keeping your home in good condition; how to find and rent a home if you have a large family; and paying the rent: what’s included — and what’s not.
A CMHC App for Consumers
“Ready Set Home” is a tool to help homebuyers, especially first-time homebuyers, make informed choices when buying a home. “Ready Set Home” offers tools to guide consumers to figure out how much they can comfortably afford to spend as well as keep track of all the details during the homebuying process.
