Accessible Apartments for Quispamsis Seniors Officially Open
QUISPAMSIS (CNB), April 30, 2010 — A new, 16-unit facility for low-income seniors in Quispamsis officially opened its doors today.
The accessible apartments are part of a $1.8-million project at the Ken-Val United Church Suites. They have been funded under Phase III of the Canada – New Brunswick Affordable Housing Agreement.
“We are pleased to work in co-operation with our partners to provide high-quality, homes for low-income seniors in the Quispamsis area,” said Saint John East MLA Roly MacIntyre. “Affordable housing is a basic need that influences an individual’s health, quality of life and self-sufficiency. It is a key component of the provincial government's Overcoming Poverty Together: The New Brunswick Economic and Social Inclusion Plan.”
MacIntyre spoke on behalf of Social Development Minister Kelly Lamrock and participated in a tour of the facility along with Saint John MP Rodney Weston and Ken Val officials today.
“The Government of Canada is committed to giving a hand-up to low-income Canadians by making affordable housing available in New Brunswick and across Canada for those who need it most,” said MP Weston. “This project will help seniors access safe and suitable housing, and build a stronger future for themselves.”
Weston attended on behalf of the Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
The units were developed by Ken-Val United Church Suites Inc., a non-profit corporation. The project received more than $1-million in rent supplements from the Province of New Brunswick and $480,000 under the federal housing trust fund to offset construction costs.
Ken-Val United Church Suites were built to high energy-efficiency standards, in consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of housing projects for low-income individuals may receive an incentive of $2,000 per apartment unit if the building is heated by low greenhouse-gas-emission technologies which meet the approval of Efficiency NB.
